Family Guide to San Francisco

On the tail end of a family reunion trip to California, we found ourselves with a free 24 hours in San Francisco before our departure flight. From the iconic landmarks and the incredible landscape, we knew that we had a full adventure ahead of us. Check out these 5 Wonders in San Francisco perfect for families!

1.       The Golden Gate Bridge

What trip to San Francisco would be complete without seeing the Golden Gate Bridge? Spoiler: None. It wouldn’t; it’s the most famous landmark of the city! It’s simply a beautiful sight to see with the massive two cables towering over the Pacific Ocean and the San Francisco Bay.  We took a gamble on the weather when we arrived, but weren’t even mad when the infamous California fog rolled in. That unique International Orange color peeked in and out of the clouds, and we were fascinated. My kids enjoyed climbing up and down the rocks and staircases, but we were sure to watch out for the biking path that surrounds the visitor’s center.

2.       The Painted Ladies

Any 90’s child understands the reference of Full House, and I’m no different. I knew that the popular tv show was filmed in the city and I did some research to find out exactly where. The Painted Ladies is the name of a row of colorful, pastel homes opposite of Alamo Square Park in a family friendly neighborhood.

The park was an excellent spot for my kids to run around, stretch their legs on the playground, and take in the city views. And yes, snap pictures in front of the famous Full House house.

3.       Fisherman’s Wharf

We’d adequately worked up an appetite by midday, so we headed to the well known Fisherman’s Wharf to grab some food. This popular pier is bustling with action and things to do for everyone. Shops and restaurants line the boardwalk, as well as several major attractions like the Aquarium and Madame Tussaud’s Wax Museum.

I knew my kids would want to see the wild life, so we spent our time admiring the infamous sea lions sunbathing on the docks.

4.       Cable Cars

I’d be remise to not mention the iconic cable cars, especially for all those kids who love trains! While we did not get to ride on one due to time constraints (we had to catch a flight out, remember?), we did see them navigating the streets as we drove around. They’re hard to miss with their bright red trolleys and loud bells. These cars are not only historic by tourist’s standards; they were actually named a historic landmark in the 1960’s. For tickets and hours of operation, check this out!

5.       Chinatown

I don’t know about your family, but ours could make an entire vacation itinerary on just places to eat. We had to grab an early dinner before we dropped off our rental car at the airport, so we decided to eat some dim sum in Chinatown. The San Francisco Chinatown is the largest Chinatown outside of Asia and the oldest one in North America.

I was hoping the food would be authentic and delicious, and the meal did not disappoint. Our specific restaurant we tried was Osmanthus Dim Sum Lounge and you can check the menu here.

San Francisco is Wonderful for Families

We had a full day of exploring one of America’s iconic cities and my kids still talk about this day trip, several months later. From the nationally renowned landmarks and adventurous rolling hills, this town made a wonderful imprint in our memories.
